Back Issues

TAG accepts online orders and payment for back issues (hard copy and PDF) going back to 1966. Please select the tabs ORDER > BACK ISSUES.

Back Issues for Sale (1966 to Present), Hard Copy and PDF:

We have some original back issues of TAG available for purchase beginning with volume 42, number 1 (January 1966). The price for most hard copy issues is $12.00 per issue, postpaid for U.S. Domestic postage.

For back issues whose physical copies are no longer available, TAG is now (2023) offering PDF copies for the same individual price ($12 for most issues) as the hard copies. To order select the tabs ORDER > BACK ISSUES.

Sales orders to Rhode Island residents require additional 7% sales tax.

Postage outside the United States on all back issue orders requires additional charges. If ordering online, Paypal (our payment processor) will add a fee to your back-issue order. This is currently true also of PDFs (delivered by email); the assessed foreign postage fee will be manually refunded.

For physical back-issue orders, please allow up to four weeks from receipt of payment for delivery. For PDFs, please allow 2-3 business days for delivery by email.

The table on the page Shop > Order Back Issues lists all TAG issues since January 1966, noting whether they available or out of print in hardcopy, or available digitally as PDFs.  To purchase back issues, use the “Order Now” button for any issue desired and pay online; alternatively, you may list the issues you seek, calculate total price, and mail your order list with payment by check to:

The American Genealogist
P.O. Box 11
Barrington RI 02806-0011

To enable us to reply efficiently to all paper correspondence and orders, please include your e-mail address.

In order to be sure that you have the correct back issue in mind, use the combined PDF index linked from our “Consolidated Table of Contents” page. Note that there are separate listings in the Consolidated Contents document for each part of an article appearing in successive issues, so one must review repeated hits for keywords in authors or titles to be sure that all parts of a serialized article have been found.

Earlier volumes of TAG:

TAG Volumes 1–8 (1922–1932), the first eight volumes, were originally published with the title New Haven Genealogical Magazine. They have been reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, Maryland, as Families of Ancient New Haven, with the original nine volumes bound into three larger volumes.

TAG Volumes 9–41 (1932–1965), thirty-three volumes, were reprinted by Picton Press in 1989, bound as eleven large volumes each containing three years of TAG. An Every Name Index to TAG, Vols. 9–41 was also created and sold as a CD-ROM by Picton Press. Picton Press is no longer in operation.

Author / Subject / Title index:

Mr. Dale H. Cook has granted permission for his author-title index of all TAG contents to be hosted on TAG’s own website. Mr. Cook’s Consolidated Contents of The American Genealogist is published in its original form on his website, plymouthcolony.net. This index currently covers TAG volumes 9 (1932) to 85 (2011). The index (PDF, approximately 1MB) is available here:

Consolidated Contents of The American Genealogist.

Contents of more recent contents are all listed on this website on individual issue covers, linked from the Contents > Current and Recent Issues page.
